Welcome to Southwest Middle School located in beautiful Albert Lea, Minnesota. Our school serves learners in sixth and seventh grades providing a well-rounded curriculum and many opportunities for achievement. Our grade levels are divided into educational teams to enhance students' academic experiences and our staff utilize the PLC Model and School-Wide Intervention Times to make sound educational decisions for all of our students. Southwest Middle School is the first Blue Zone Certified School in Minnesota and a winner of the MASSP Silver Star of Innovation Award (2015).

This article appeared in the NAESP Principal magazine in the Ten to Teen section of the May/June 2015 issue. Authored by Southwest Middle School's Principal Steve Kovach, the article talks about the creation of our TigerPlus intervention time, process our building staff used to make this vision a reality, the results we saw as a building, and our plans as we look toward the future of TigerPlus.  

Last Day of School - June 5, 2015

Another school year full of learning and growing comes to an end this week at Southwest Middle School.  The last day of classes at SWMS will be Friday, June 5th, 2015Students will be released at 12:00 PM (Noon).  Bag lunches from our cafeteria will be available for students wanting to eat lunch before heading home for the Summer.  6th grade students wanting reading materials for the summer may check out up to six books from the SW Media Center by Friday and will be responsible for them until Fall.

Southwest Receives Silver Star of Innovation Award from MASSP

Southwest Middle School received the Silver Star of Innovation Award from MASSP (Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals) in April of 2015.  Southwest Middle School was one of twelve schools selected for the Silver Star of Innovation Award placing them amongst a small group of schools achieving that level of recognition.

Steve Kovach of Northfield has been the principal at Southwest Middle School for one and a half years. Prior to his job in Albert Lea, he worked multiple capacities in Lakeville Area Public Schools.
